About Poreč

Porec is a town in Istria county, located on the west coast of the Istrian peninsula. Porec is a city of culture, tourism, sport and entertainment.

In the town of Porec most famous monument protected by UNESCO is Eufrazijeva Basilica, which contains original mosaics from the 6th century.

The climate in Porec is very mild, August is the warmest and January the coldest month of the year.

History of Porec

From archaeological findings, Porec is inhabited since prehistoric times.

In 2 century BC Roman Castrum was built where today is the old city. Castrum was 400m long and 200m wide.

During the reign of Roman Emperor Augustus in the 1st century Castrum was officially declared the city and included in the Roman colony Colonia Iulia Parentium.

When the Roman Empire fell 476th The town is administered under various rulers.

The turbulent past of the city swept the entire European history: Romans, Aquilea, Huns, Byzantines, Slavs, Avars, Ostrogoths, Lombards, Franks, Venice, Napoleon, Austria-Hungary, Italy, Yugoslavia - now Croatia.

The Croats arrived in Porec in the 6th century and settled permanently around 620th year.

1861. Porec was the capital of Istria.

From 1920th-1943th Porec was under Italy and then on 10 Septmeber 1943. became part of the Croatia where it is today.
